On 16 June 2026, a strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the area southeast of the city of Palu in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 42 km southeast of Palu at a depth of about 10 km.
The earthquake caused damage to residential and public buildings and was followed by several aftershocks. Residents were evacuated to open areas as a precaution, while local authorities continued to assess the damage and ensure the safety of affected communities. Palu remains a particularly vulnerable area, still recovering from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the region in 2018.
